iOS 4.2 GM Fixes the Lockscreen Secuirty Flaw

Just a follow up to the previous post about iOS 4.1 critical bug which lets you bypass passcode lock and make calls, see the entire list of contact, recent call history and voicemails. The new iOS 4.2 GM which was released last night, has fixed this security flaw and it's no more working.

As expected, we've been trying for many times but it didn't work with iOS 4.2 gold master. This version is only for developers but you can update to iOS 4.2 right now without waiting for public release some time next week using our guide posted here.

Apple to Extend iTunes Song Previews to 90 Seconds

We're just in, great news for our artists! Apple has informed music labels that it's preparing to extend the duration of songs previews in iTunes to 90 seconds that are at least 2 minutes and 30 seconds long. Shorter ones will continue the 30-seconds samples.

Actually, there's no official word if this is for the entire iTunes world wide, but at least for USA it is coming soon, according to the report over Symphonic Distribution. There was some reports from CNET just two days before Apple's media event on September 1st indicating that iTunes song previews would extend to 30 seconds happening in the event, but it failed to materialize in the event as the change had been held up by licensing issues, which seems now everything is well!

No PwnageTool for Windows

There are some unpleasant news, yesterday MuscleNerd the well-known iPhone hacker spread the pleasant news around the imminent release of PwnageTool for Windows to jailbreak all iOS devices on iOS 4.1 from Chpwn, as you know PwnageTool has never been release for Windows, it's only available for Mac OS X , but now Chpwn has just confirmed that there will not be a PwnageTool for Windows.

Here is what Chpwn said for some users:
2013btuttle1: @chpwn is there an ETA on win pt? I've been waiting... Haha
Chpwn: @2013btuttle1 I don't think it is needed at all. Use limerain greenpoison redsn0w -- all good options.

sheikhali: @chpwn Can we expect PT for Win to go live by the end of this week?
Chpwn: @sheikhali No, there is no need for PwnageTool on ANY platform

Wake Up! Your iPhone Wants You to Sleep in…

Here is an interesting bug found in iOS 4.1 for our fellow European iPhone users.
When switching between Daylight Savings Time and Standard Time, your iPhone actually figures out what time it really is where you are, and changes the clock accordingly. However, it doesn’t change these settings for your alarm clock, which caused some Euros to be waken up an hour later than they were supposed to.

This first appeared in Australia a few weeks ago and even though Apple is aware of the bug, they still haven’t released a fix for it yet. Engadget did a little bit of digging and here is what they found out:
Deleting and re-adding the alarms will NOT fix the issue. We’ve now tested a number of scenarios under iOS 4.1 on European iPhone 4 and 3GS devices for ourselves. The bug appears when using a repeating alarm for anything other than “every day.” So for example, your alarm will go off an hour late if it’s set for “weekdays,” or “weekends,” or every “Monday.” The following alarms are not affected by the bug:
  • An alarm that doesn’t repeat (repeat set to “never”)
  • An alarm set to repeat “every day”
You can test yourself by creating a repeating alarm (but not every day) to go off one minute in the future and 59 minutes in the past.
The fix is probably going to come with iOS 4.2 in the next few days but if it doesn’t come before November 7th (date the US will make the switch), be very careful. You don’t want to get to work an hour late, or do you?

Skyfire Hits The App Store. iPhone Browser That Can Play Flash Videos

The wait for a stable way to get Flash on the iPhone is almost over as Apple has quietly approved SkyFire, an app that was submitted about 2 months ago. SkyFire, which will be available on Thursday in the App Store is the first app of its kind to be approved by Apple.

I don’t think I have to refresh your memory by explaining that Apple and Adobe’s Flash aren’t BFFs. Apple has made it pretty clear before they wouldn’t not allow Flash on any iOS device. SkyFire goes around these restrictions to allow Flash content to be downloaded to their servers, then “translates” and renders the video into HTML5, which is supported by all iOS devices.
SkyFire won’t work with every site though. For example, it will not be able to convert Hulu videos, or Flash games. Everything else should be a go.
The app will be available for download on Thursday 9am eastern Time for $2.99. How much do you value Flash content? Enough to pay that price?
