HOW TO: Jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 iPhone 4, 3gs, 3g, iPad, iPodTouch with Redsn0w 0.9.6b4

Few moment ago we broke the news about the release of Redsn0w 0.9.6b4 to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 on iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G, iPod touch 4G, 3G and iPad with working MobileSubstrate, as we told you earlier that redsn0w 0.9.6b4  is based on GeoHot’s limera1n bootrom exploit.

The bad new is that right now, the redsn0w 0.9.6b4 is a tethered or semi-tethered jailbreak for some devices (i.e. you will lose your jailbreak every time you reboot your iDevice, so you have to follow the following steps every reboot to have a jailbroken device )

Untethered Devices:
  • iPhone 3GS (old bootrom)
  • iPhone 3
  • iPod touch 2G (Non-MC Model)

Tethered Devices:
  • iPhone 3GS (new bootrom)
  • iPhone 4
  • iPad
  • iPod touch 2G (MC Model)
  • iPod touch 3G
  • iPod touch 4G
NOTE: Those of you who rely on a carrier unlock stay away from Redsn0w and iOS 4.2.1.

GUIDE:

STEP 1: Download redsn0w 0.9.6b4,  iOS 4.2.1 for your device.

STEP 2: Update to 4.2.1 firmware using the IPSW file you just downloaded via iTunes 10.1.

STEP 3: Launch Redsn0w 0.9.6b4,  and browse for iOS 4.2.1 firmware final version

STEP 4: Select "Install Cydia" and click on "Next"
STEP 5: Now make sure your device is both OFF and PLUGGED IN to the computer before you click “Next”.
STEP 6: At this stage you will need to put your iPhone in DFU mode by holding “Power” button and then while holding the “Power” button, you will now have to hold “Home” button too. Now after few seconds release “Power” button but keep holding “Home” button until installation begins.

STEP 7: You will Get a Jailbroken Device on the latest iOS 4.2.1  as soon as the process ends.

STEP 8: This step is only for these devices iPhone 4, 3GS (New Bootrom), iPod touch 4G,  3G, 2G, iPad. While this is tethered jailbreak and whenever you want to do anything related to jailbreak like SSH your device, or running Cydia, you must first run your device in the so called “jailbroken state” on every reboot by using “Just boot tethered right now” option.

Unlock 06.15.00 on iPhone 3GS / 3G [ How to ]

Just a couple of hours back, the iPhone Dev Team has updated their carrier unlock tool which brings unlock for iPhone 3GS & 3G on iOS 4.1 or iOS 4.2.1 but unfortunately, you have to update your device's baseband to 06.15.00 to be able to unlock it.
Simply follow the steps below to jailbreak and unlock your iPhone 3G on iOS 4.2.1 using PwnageTool 4.1.3 for Mac OS X.

STEP 1: Download PwnageTool 4.1.3 unlock edition from here.

STEP 2: Download iOS 4.2.1 for your device and also catch iOS 3.2.2 from here before it's removed (required to update the baseband). Then copy all the files to your desktop.

STEP 3: Now launch PwnageTool and select iPhone 3GS / 3G and point it to the original iOS 4.2.1 firmware you downloaded.

STEP 4: You'll now be asked if you want to update your baseband to the 06.15 version. If you are on 05.14 or 05.15 or higher you will need to do this to unlock. You do not need to do this for jailbreak only. Click on YES and then select Browse for IPSW and point it to iOS 3.2.2 you downloaded.
STEP 5: You'll have to choose some options as installing Cydia packages, custom logos and packages. Finally, hit the blue the build button.
STEP 6: You'll be asked to save the cooked firmware. Please allow up to 10 minutes.
STEP 7: When prompted if your iPhone has been Pwned before, we clicked No. It allows for a more thorough restore. Once done, follow the instructions seen on the screen to enter into DFU mode
STEP 8: Now, You will have to restore your iPhone to the jailbroken custom firmware by Clicking on the iPhone icon on the left sidebar of iTunes then hold left “alt” button (“Shift” button on Windows) on the keyboard and then click on “Restore” then release the alt button, Now Select the custom firmware created by PwnageTool and Let iTunes go in a bunch of steps.

AppSync 4.2 for iOS 4.2.1

The most popular tweak in Cydia, AppSync is now available for iOS 4.2.1. It lets you install cracked apps on iOS 4.2.1 firmware by patching the MobileInstallation file on iOS 4.2.1. Once you have installed AppSync iOS 4.2 on your iDevice running jailbroken iOS 4.2.1, you’ll be able to install cracked apps (.IPA) on your iDevice without using iTunes.

Your device must be jailbroken on iOS 4.2.1, use our guide posted here to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 devices with the latest version of Redsn0w then tap to Cydia and add http://cydia.hackulo.us as a source then search for AppSynce for iOS 4.2 and install it.

Save and Reinstall A List of Your Cydia Apps [How to]

In case you upgraded your device to a newer version of iOS and want to keep your Cydia apps, themes, tweaks, package and etc from losing, here's a few simple steps to save your Cydia apps list and reinstall it again to your device.

Save your Cydia apps:
  • Open Mobile Terminal (you can get it from Cydia)
  • Enter this command:  "dpkg-get-selections> installed-apps.txt"
  • Now we have created the Cydia app list file which called "installed-apps.txt" in " / var / mobile "
  • You are done, use your favorite SFTP client (Cyberduck (Mac OS X) or WinSCP (Windows) to SHH into your device).

Reinstalling your Cydia apps again:
Now I will submit the file called "installed-apps.txt" to "/ var / mobile", after reinstalling Cydia and Terminal, type this commands:
  • "su"
  • Type your password (default password: alpine)
  • "dpkg-set-selections "
  • "apt-get dselect-upgrade"
  • If you found problems type this command: "apt-get dselect-fix-missing-upgrade"
  • Now Cydia will automatically reinstall all your packages.

iOS 4.3 to Launch in December 13 ??

Apple is reportedly targeting mid-December for iOS 4.3 release and bring along something called “app subscriptions”. Apple and News Corp are currently working together to launch a tablet-focused news product, with John Gruber suggest that Apple is planning for a December 9th media event to introduce the new feature.

MacStories's being tipped from a reliable source that iOS 4.2.1 was delayed and released after its released date. Anyway, before the WiFi issues were discovered, Apple was already planning to release a new build of iOS 4.x in mid-December. Most specifically, they were planning for an iOS 4.3 release on December 13th, which is a Monday.
Here’s what we heard from a reliable source: when Apple didn’t know about the WiFi issues in the GM seed of iOS 4.2, the OS was scheduled to be released weeks before Nov. 22nd. Apple found out about the WiFi issues, released a second GM build and iOS 4.2 came out yesterday. It came out in November, but it should have been out in the first half of November. Anyway, before the WiFi issues were discovered, Apple was already planning to release a new build of iOS 4.x in mid-December. Most specifically, they were planning for an iOS 4.3 release on December 13th, which is a Monday.

Our source tells us it is unclear whether the “extra time” that was required to ship iOS 4.2 (actually, it’s iOS 4.2.1) will cause a delay for the rumored release of iOS 4.3 on December 13th or not. iOS 4.3 should, however, include bug fixes and maintenance of the code. It’s likely that 4.3 will also address the initial issues found in AirPlay, but we can’t confirm this just yet.
The source indicates that iOS 4.3 will bring the new subscription functionality needed for The Daily, with a possibility of more substantial cloud-based services coming at the same time. We'll be covering this, stay tuned!

Real White iPhone 4s on China's Grey Market ?

The Chinese web site Giz-China has published a photos claiming that there are genuine white iPhone 4s is being sold in the China's grey market (a.k.a black markets). Many digital retailers in China have been stockpiling the white devices due to its big profits.

About pricing, it starts from around 5500 Yuan ($828) and rising to nearly 8000 Yuan ($1204) for the base model 16Gb version and it's higher than these for the 32Gb models. Of course these prices are more expensive than the official retail price of the regular black iPhone 4.
This type of illegal resale has been a persistent problem for Apple. In 2008, the New York Times estimated that there were 1.4 million ill-gotten iPhones in the world. At this time last year, the Wall Street Journal estimated that number had grown to 2 million in China alone.

Tip: How to Quickly Respring your iPhone

Many of us jailbreakers know how frustrating it can be to debug the modifications we make to iOS. When installing an app in Cydia, if the app requires it, Cydia gives you a prompt to restart your springboard.

There are two types of restarts you can have on your iPhone: a hardware restart and a software restart. A hardware restart takes considerably longer, and it is when you see the Apple boot logo (or your own, modded logo). A simple software restart usually does the trick for installing new packages on your iPhone, and it also helps with ironing out the bugs you may be experiencing…
Besides the prompt in Cydia, there is no real way to easily initiate a software restart on the iPhone. A hardware restart is as simple as manually powering down the iPhone and turning it back on. However, this type of a reboot takes considerably longer. And in most cases, it’s not necessary.
Luckily, there’s a little, free utility out there called “Respring.” Once you download Respring to your home screen, it acts as a quick toggle to do a software restart of your iPhone. Whenever you click the icon, a quick screen pops up saying that your springboard is being restarted. That’s all there is to it!
There is also another free, lightweight mod in Cydia called “RespringLoader.” All it does is install a respring toggle into your iPhone’s main Settings pane.

You have to note that Cydia doesn't work till now due to some issues on the private APIs used by Cyida which has been changed by Apple. Bud don't worry the developers has fixed these issues and it is only a matter of time as they are waiting for the iOS 4.2.1 public release. For now you can install jailbroken-apps via SSH - until we got the new Cydia version - as you have full root access on your iOS device.

STEP 4: Select "Install Cydia" and click on Next
STEP 5: Now make sure your device is both OFF and PLUGGED IN to the computer before you click “Next”.

Rage HD Lands on the iPhone [and It Looks Amazing]

Rage HD is an on-rails shooter where the character moves for you while you control his field of view, pointing and shooting at your enemies with an insane range of weapons.
Video Below :

Enough with the talking, let’s have a look at Rage HD in action…

It’s interesting to note that iD Software released 2 versions of the game. A “normal” one for older iDevices like the iPhone 3G, and the HD version for more robust devices like the iPhone 4 or the iPad.

Wi-Fi Sync: iTunes Compatibility and 2.0 Hype

The developer of the popular Cydia app Wi-Fi Sync has confirmed that the current desktop versions are completely compatible with iTunes 10.1. Some are holding off due to the hopeful release of an untethered jailbreak, now that iOS 4.2.1 is right around the corner.

I have been using iTunes 10.1 with my jailbroken 4.1 iDevice since the release, and so far I have not experienced any complications. I can confirm that Wi-Fi Sync does work for me, as long as I uninstall it between iUpgrades.
The developer emphasized that iTunes will work; there are no new client versions on the website as of today. He also teased us with a promise of awesome features in the upcoming version 2.0.
I am genuinely excited to try remote syncing. I signed up for the beta, but I have not received any details yet. Have any of you heard anything from the developer? Speculations on coming features? Let me hear your guesses.

Get Physical Keyboard on your iPhone 4 with “Keyboard Buddy Case”

Apple iPhone 4 owners who have been envious of BlackBerry owners with the integrated thumb keyboard or Droid owners with their sliding keyboard can put an end to all that envy with Boxwave’s newest case.

Keyboard Buddy Case accessory adds a bit of protection to your smartphone and also provide a thumb keyboard that slides out in landscape mode, mimicking the look and functionality of the Android-powered Motorola Droid and Droid 2 on Verizon Wireless’s network.

The Boxwave accessory provides a four-row keyboard with a dedicated row for the number keys; however, the spacebar is squeezed into the last letter row on the bottom as depicted in the picture.

Keyboard Buddy Case provides up to 45 days of use on a USB cable for charging and will connect to your iPhone 4 via a Bluetooth connection. The device normally retails for $80, but is currently on sale for $70 through the company’s website.

VoIP Bug in iOS 4.2 Golden Master

According to MacRumors, Toktumi the company behind the well-known VoIP application Line2 for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad has sent an email to its users
warning them from upgrading to iOS 4.2 due to a new bug founded in this version which results in the ringer continuing to ring even after a call is answered when Line2 is running in the background.

Attention all Line2 iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad users:

Please do not upgrade to iOS version 4.2.

If you upgrade to iOS 4.2 and you are running Line2 in the background, the ringer will continue to ring even after an incoming call is answered. This affects Line2 as well as all other VoIP and social calling apps. (Note: If you do not use Line2 your Toktumi service will not be effected.)

Apple Developer Support is aware of this issue and has designated its status as 'severe'. However, as of the most recent iOS beta (GMSeed build), this issue is still not resolved. We apologize for this inconvenience and will update you as soon as we get more information from Apple.

Line2 will continue to work as normal with your current operating system. We strongly encourage you not to install iOS 4.2 until Apple fixes the upgrade issue. We will send out an email update as soon as it is safe to upgrade.

Sincerely,
The Toktumi/Line2 Team
So it is expected that Apple has handled this bug in the newly released iOS 4.2.1 GM build for developers , you can check out details in this post.

Verizon CEO: iPhone will Come to Verizon when “Apple Thinks it’s Time”

Couple of days back, we saw a Verizon's white iPhone 4 leaked with a screenshot which could be real or fake. Actually, it seems real especially after Verizon's CEO interviewed by WSJ about Verizon's iPhone.

Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg noted:
If the iPhone comes to us, it’s because Apple thinks it’s time.

Our interests are beginning to come together more but they have to take steps to align their technology with ours.
Also as noted by CultOfMac, The operator of Verizon Careers’ Twitter account pimped their recent addition of the iPad to their mobile line-up, and was then asked by Twitter user slink317 for an “iPhone hint?”

Verizon Career’s response accompanied a retweet of slinky123′s question: “yes that is the latest scoop.”. The tweet has been deleted after that but thanks to guys over CultOfMac and AppAdvice for spotting this.

Google Docs Finally Comes to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch

Google has just announced the release of a new documents editor for Google Docs, which will allow users to edit documents on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. The previous mobile version of Google Docs allowed users to view documents in read-only mode.
So by offering Google Docs on the iDevice, Google will be able to compete with Apple’s popular iWorks suite of apps for the iPad and other third party apps such as Documents to Go and Quickoffice that have been offering this capability for quite sometime now.

Now, since Google Docs will be free, it could be on the top of these apps offering the same feature.
That means that...
  • You can work on that important memo...while on the bus or train to work.
  • If you’re behind on a group proposal, but really want to make it to the ball game tonight, your whole team can work on it from the bleacher seats.
  • You can take minute-by-minute notes at a concert so you’ll always remember the setlist. And your friends can jealously follow in real-time at home.
  • ...and the list goes on!
If you’re a Google Docs users, you can check it out by pointing your iDevice’s Safari browser (iOS 3.0 or later) to docs.google.com and selecting the document that you want to edit.

So, will you give up other apps and be one of Google Docs users? Or you prefer using Apple’s iWork suite of apps or one of the other third party apps?

Windows Phone 7 Jailbreak First Step [Video]

Yesterday we reported about the Australian developer, Chris Walshie who is working hard to develop a way to jailbreak WP7 as well as he was successfully able to prove a method to run "native unmanaged code" on a retail Windows Phone 7 device. Let's check out this in action.

I’ll be posting the code in a couple of days, need to clean it all up. And yes, it’s a managed app running unmanaged code :)

You’ve got FULL access, create, delete, browse files etc. Just can’t delete system ROM files, IE coredll.dll (obviously).

I would imagine that we'll see the new third-party jailbreak store apps very soon, as the developers won't find the complexities such as those on iOS Jailbreak. What do you think?
