iPad 4 jailbroken

Hot on the heels of the iPad mini being jailbroken,
well-known developer and iOS hacker Chpwn has announced that he has hacked his iPad 4. Both tablets officially went on sale last Friday.
As Chpwn points out, Cydia doesn’t look any different on the fourth generation iPad than it did on its predecessor. But the fact that it’s been jailbroken is actually pretty significant…
The new iPad features a handful of improvements over the previous model, including an upgraded FaceTime camera, the new Lightning port, and of course, Apple’s new A6X processor.
Though Chpwn’s jailbreak will remain a failbreak — meaning it won’t be released publicly in an effort to find more exploits — it’s a really good sign that it works on the iPad 4′s new chipset.
If you’re keeping score, the iPhone 5 and both of the new iPads have now been jailbroken, giving the Dev Team and others good starting points for developing public jailbreaks for the devices.

How to jailbreak iOS 6.1 beta

If you’re a developer wishing to jailbreak your pre-A5 device running iOS 6.1 beta,
then you’ll be happy to know that it can be easily done using the same method we used tojailbreak the iOS 6.0.1 public release.
This is, of course, a tethered jailbreak, and it only works with pre-A5 devices like the iPhone 4, or the iPhone 3GS. For the full tutorial, check inside…
Note: iOS 6.1 beta is for developers only.
Step 1: Download RedSn0w 0.9.15b3 and iOS 6.0 from our Downloads page.
Step 2: Place your pre-A5 device into DFU mode with it connected to your computer.
Step 3: Open RedSn0w, and click Extras > Select IPSW, and select the 6.0 firmware for your device. It should successfully identify the 6.0 firmware. Click back.
Step 4: Click Jailbreak on the main page of RedSn0w, then once it’s finished loading, ensure Install Cydia is checked and click Next.
Step 5: The jailbreak process will begin, and it will take a bit to finish. Once finished, you should be at your Lock screen. Close out of RedSn0w.
Step 6: Place the device back into DFU mode, and reopen RedSn0w. Go to Extras > Select IPSW, and again point to the 6.0 firmware.
Step 7: Once it successfully identifies, click Just boot. A tethered boot will be performed, and eventually you’ll end up back on your Lock screen. Unlock the device, and you should see Cydia on the second page of your Home screen.
Congratulations, you just jailbroke iOS 6.1 beta.

How to jailbreak iOS 6.0.1

iOS 6.0.1 was just released a few minutes ago, but we’ve already confirmed
it can be jailbroken right now using the existing jailbreak tools for iOS 6.
Although RedSn0w was recently updated to 0.9.15b3, the update doesn’t yet include support for iOS 6. That’s okay, because you can still point at the already supported iOS 6 firmware and successfully jailbreak iOS 6.0.1.
Note: This is a tethered jailbreak for pre-A5 devices (iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 4th generation) only.
Step 1: Download RedSn0w 0.9.15b3 and iOS 6.0 for your specific device from our Downloads page.
Step 2: Connect your device to your computer and place it into DFU mode.
Step 3: Open RedSn0w, and ensure it detects your device.
Step 4: Click Extras > Select IPSW, and select the iOS 6.0 firmware for your device. It should successfully identify the build.
Step 5: Go back to the main RedSn0w page and click Jailbreak. RedSn0w will process, and then allow you to install Cydia, which should be already checked on the next screen. Click Next, and the jailbreak will finish processing and begin on your iPhone. Keep RedSn0w open.
Step 6: Once the jailbreak is complete and you are back on your device’s Lock screen, place your device back into DFU mode.
Step 7: On the main page of RedSn0w click Extras > Just boot. This will perform a tethered boot. Your device should reboot with a pineapple logo.
Step 8: Once the device reboots, you should see Cydia on the Home screen.
Were you able to successfully jailbreak? Share your experience in the comments section below.

Jim Mergard joing Apple - Goodbye Samsung!

Samsung made headlines recently because they decided to include additional members to its team of chip designers, who are based in Texas. Many of the additional members on the team have vast experience in chips that are meant for server systems. Now, one of those team members has decided to leave Samsung for greener pastures at Apple.

Jim Mergard, who has 16 years of experience in Advanced Micro Devices under his belt, was hired recently by gadget maker Apple. The chip designer held the position of chief engineer and vice president at Samsung before he decided to leave. One of his greatest achievements at his former company is spear-heading the creation of a sophisticated AMD chip. This AMD chip, which was code-named Brazos, was specifically designed for affordable portable computers.
Currently, there are numerous opportunities available for experienced engineers since their technical talent is in very high demand allowing for movement from one company to another. Moreover, movement of resources between Apple and Samsung could not have come at a more interesting time.
It is common knowledge that Samsung and Apple are rivals when it comes to smartphones. In addition, the two companies are battling each other in court for one reason or another. Apple has accused the South Korean giant of patent infringement and has thus taken them to court. As is to be expected, Samsung shot back with accusations of its own. Ironically, the two are also partners as Apple relies on Samsung to make their chips for their devices.
For both Samsung and Apple, chip design is becoming a very important factor. Samsung has claimed that they will up their game with regard to the development of microprocessors as well as other related items. Apple has also been positioning itself in the chip design field by increasing their chip designers over numerous years. As it were, both companies use ARM Holdings technology to develop their processors.
Patrick Moorhead, of Moor Insights & Strategy, was quoted saying that the latest addition to Apple’s chip design team, Jim Mergard, was a good choice because he brings vast knowledge in PC technology and SoCs. He goes on to say that Mergard’s talents might propel Apple’s Mac PC efforts to change the Intel chips on the Macs to SoCs.
It is still yet to be determined whether Mr. Mergard will be placed at Apple’s headquarters in California or he will stay in Austin, Texas. Since Apple purchased the start-up company Intrinsity in 2010, its presence in chip design has been felt along with the existence of a customer care center that has been in Austin for a while so the new addition to the team should feel right at home.

iPhone 5 users dominate Galaxy S3 users in web traffic!

The on-going battle between Apple’s latest device, the iPhone 5 and Samsung’s forerunner, the Samsung  Galaxy S3, has produced a new winner in the latest contest. Recently, a study was carried out by Chitika to find out which of the phones had more web traffic and the results they got proved to be very interesting.

iphone 5 vs galaxy s3
The Galaxy S3 Sapphire Black
The expectation had been that the Samsung Galaxy S3 would have garnered another win seeing as how it was released in late May and the iPhone 5 was launched only a few weeks ago. However, according to the study performed by Chitika, that is not the case. In their study it became clear that the iPhone 5 won over the Galaxy S3! Or rather, the users did. Let us explain...

So far, the Samsung has managed to sell over 20 million units of the Galaxy S3 in comparison to the 5 million iPhone 5’s that have been sold since it was launched 3 weeks ago. In addition, the sales of the Galaxy S3 are still more than those of the iPhone 5 according to recent reports. Even with those outstanding numbers, the study revealed that users of the iPhone 5 are more active than the users of the Samsung Galaxy S3 with regard to web traffic.

The iPhone 5
The Chitika analysis was carried out over a 7-day period between October 3rd, 2012 and October 9th, 2012. The analysis was based on a large number of mobile advertisement impressions from both the iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3. From those statistics, the analysts were able to track the difference in Internet traffic volumes between the two phones.

It is expected that more studies will be conducted by Chitika as well as other companies to track various statistics for phones or devices that have been launched recently. The statistics are important because from them we are able to see how mobile development is growing. It is assumed that with time, mobile usage will surpass that of the PC, which may one day become obsolete.

Mobile advertisements are going to hold more weight as tablets and smartphones become increasingly available. From the data received by Chitika, it can be seen that search engines like Google would make more profits from mobile advertisements on the iPhone 5 rather than on the Samsung Galaxy S3.

How to hide multiple app icons, no jailbreak required

A while ago we told you about StifleStand — an app for
Windows or Mac that allows you to hide Newsstand without the need for a jailbreak.
Now there’s another option for hiding Newsstand, along with a host of other default iOS apps. Again, like StifleStand, no jailbreak is needed for this method either.
In the following video walkthrough, we’ll provide you with a demonstration of Rag3Hack, a new website dedicated to hiding stock iOS apps on any device, regardless of whether or not the device is jailbroken.
Note: Proceed at your own risk. Although this caused no harm to my device, I had no personal data on the device at the time of me using it. The “hack” does connect to additional server(s), so there is a possibility that this could result in some sort of privacy/security issue. With that in mind, we can’t outright recommend that you use Rag3Hack, but we wanted to make you aware of its existence, and show you it working in action. Check below for more details.

How to hide stock iOS apps with the Rag3Hack website:

Step 1: To use Rag3Hack, navigate to the following site directly from your iOS device:http://rag3hack.no-ip.org/. This should work on any firmware, for any iOS device, and again, you don’t need to be jailbroken in order to do this. If this site isn’t loading for you then try again later. It looks like the traffic from iDB may have crashed his web server.
Step 2: Once there, tap the “Hide Apps without jailbreaking” link, and read the instructions on the following page. Be sure to read the instructions thoroughly so that you have a solid idea as to how this works.
Step 3: Tap on the link of the app that you want to hide. Ensure that the app actually exists on your device. For instance, there’s no dedicated FaceTime app to be found on an iPhone, but you will find one on the iPod touch or iPad.
Step 4: A prompt should pop up asking you to Install.
Step 5: Tap Install, and you will be taken to the Home screen.
Step 6: A new prompt should pop up stating that it’s unable to download the application. Tap Done.
Step 7: The app icon in question should be blank, with half a loading bar. Tap and hold on any app icon to place your device into wiggle mode.
Step 8: Tap the x icon on the blank app to delete the app in question.
Step 9: After hiding apps using Rag3Hack, you can get them back by simply rebooting your device.
The nice thing about RageHack is that it runs right on your device. There’s no need to hook your iOS device up to either a Mac or a PC, as it runs totally independent, and doesn’t require any separate app to initiate the hack.
The links on the Rag3Master site point to items similar to the following:
itms-services://?action=download-manifest&url=http://maty1400.ma.funpic.de/beta/Messages.plist
If you navigate directly to: http://maty1400.ma.funpic.de/beta/Messages.plist, you’ll find a sparse plist file with a link to a delete.ipa file. It certainly doesn’t seem like the creator of the site, @ragemasta is up to anything malicious, but again, proceed at your own accord.
What do you think about being able to hide stock iOS apps like this?

iPhone 5 vs iPhone 4S - the Review

With the launch of the new iPhone 5, many smartphone users, especially those who bought the iPhone 4S recently, have been left wondering whether it would be worth it to buy Apple’s latest device. To find out which of the two phones is better, we need to compare some of the similar features.

iPhone 5 vs iPhone 4S Review
The iPhone 4S next to the larger iPhone 5

For starters, the difference between the size of the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 5 is minimal-a 1/2inch vertically and over 1 inch in depth. Apple’s newest addition, the iPhone 5, is longer, thinner and has a longer widescreen display (16:9) as compared to the iPhone 4S.

iPhone 5 animation
360 degree view of the iPhone 5
With regard to design, both of these devices look amazing. The iPhone 4/4S has one of the best designs on any phone so far though it is rather easy to break due to the glass panels placed at the front and back. The iPhone 5’s design has somewhat remedied this problem as it has an aluminum panel at the back. In addition, its appearance is much better than that of the iPhone 4S because the finer points of the device and its overall shape have been devised with accuracy giving it a more stunning look.

The iPhone 5’s A6 ARM chip processor has the same design as that of the iPhone 4S though it has numerous modifications. These modifications make the phone’s processor better giving it an edge over the previous models. As for its camera, the iPhone 5 has disappointed many of its customers because the update on it is very slight. It still has the same lens speed and megapixel rating as that of the iPhone 4S. The only difference is the lens glass, which is important though not what was expected. And of course there is still the the issue of Purple Flares on the iPhone 5! However, here is a comparison that does show that there is some improvement from the previous model:

iphone 5 camera vs iphone 4

Another disappointing feature on the iPhone 5 is the flash memory storage. The cost to install flash storage on the phone is still very expensive and it hasn’t changed much since the previous models, going as far back as the iPhone 3GS. Therefore, for those who require faster data speeds and are on the Verizon network, it would be advisable to purchase the new iPhone 5. For users on AT&T and Sprint, it is recommended that you stick to the iPhone 4S until the next iPhone launch as it is not that different from the iPhone 5 as far as most users are concerned and educated.

Of course, you can always let it all go to hell and get the GooPhone I5, the iPhone 5 clone for $300 in China! Hahaha!

CameraTweak adds tons of useful options to the stock camera app

From a quality standpoint, the iPhone’s built in camera
has always been near the top of its respective class. But, admittedly, there are a few chinks in the armor when it comes to advanced camera features.
For instance, there’s no countdown timer to be found inside the camera app. Also, more advanced features like independent reticles for exposure and focus are no where to be found. And what about a built in time lapse feature? That seems like only a mere dream at this point.
That is, of course, unless you are jailbroken.
Jailbreakers have the luxury of adding additional features to stock apps, and the Camera app is no exception. CameraTweak is a new jailbreak tweak that affords the ability to add all of the previously mentioned features into the stock Camera app, and then some. Take a look at our video walkthrough inside for the full details.
Once you install CameraTweak, you won’t notice any new settings panel inside the Settings app, but you will notice a host of new options within the stock Camera app.
To the left of the camera shutter button resides a new button that resembles the volume control slider knob found in the app switcher. Tapping this button engages a brand new panel, which flanks the stock set of buttons. The functions inside this new panel change depending on the current mode (photo or video) that you have enabled.
If you’re in photo mode, you’re presented with four buttons that perform the following:
  • Advanced mode
  • Time Lapse mode
  • Timer
  • Composition overlays
Video mode features a set of different options:
  • Advanced mode
  • Custom Frame Rate
  • Resolution
  • Aspect Ratio
Let’s break down each of these options, shall we?
Advanced mode
This mode is present on both photo and video. This mode allows you to swap out the combined exposure and focus reticle for two separate reticles geared towards handling exposure and focus. Each reticle can be positioned separately, and locked independently of one another using a tap and long hold.
In my opinion, this is where the stock iOS camera lacks most, though, I can see why Apple omitted the option, because it can make composing photos slightly more complicated than the current combined system. Still, I wish Apple would give advanced shooters the option to separate the two essential entities.
Time lapse mode
Photos only. Time lapse mode, as its name states, allow to to create a series of shots over a specific preset interval of time. This can be very handy if you have your iPhone setup on a tripod system, and want to catch the sun rising, traffic flow, etc. You can configure time lapse photography between 1 and 60 seconds or 1 and 60 minutes.
Timer mode
Photos only. To this day, I still find it hard to believe that iOS contains no built in timer function for the stock Camera app. Instead, you’ll need to rely on 3rd party apps like Camera+ for this function. Courtesy of CameraTweak, a timer can be configured to fire between 1 and 60 seconds.
Composition overlays
Photos only. iOS does feature a built in 9 block grid that you can enable in the Camera options, but CameraTweak goes a few steps further. Here, you’ll find an additional three layouts that can be easily enabled via the tweak’s menu.
Custom frame rate
Video only. The video frame rate can be adjusted between 1 and 60 frames per second. Clock down to the former end of the scale for some very interesting effects.
Resolution
Video only. There are several resolution settings contained within CameraTweak, and they are as follows: Low (3g transfer), Medium (wifi transfer), 352×288, 648×480 (VGA), 960×540, 1280×720 (720p HD), and 1920×1080 (full HD). Since the current jailbreakable iPhones only support 720p, that option was unavailable in my test.
Aspect ratio
Video only. You can select from three different aspect ratios, and they are 4:3, 16:9, and 2:35:1. Letterboxes will be applied to your fram depending on which aspect ratio enable.
The bottom line
This tweak is excellent, especially for jailbroken iPhone 4S users. Not only do you already have a quite capable camera, but you have the necessary speed to go along with the added features. Testing CameraTweak out on the iPhone 4 worked well enough, but you will notice a reduction in speed when using the Camera app.
If you’re serious about iPhone photography, and you have a jailbroken device, then don’t hesitate to try out CameraTweak — it’s just as good as it looks. CameraTweak can be downloaded from Cydia’s BigBoss repo for $0.99, which is crazy cheap considering how many options it contains.
Let me know what you think about CameraTweak in the comments below.

Comex no longer working at Apple

Nicholas Allegra, a.k.a.Comex — the iOS hacker
responsible for the popular jailbreak tool JailbreakMe — has parted ways with Apple after interning there for a little over a year.
Last August, Comex broke the news that sent shockwaves through the jailbreak community, announcing that he would be joining the very company whose security he’d successfully undermined more than once.
Is it possible that Comex might pick up where he left off in the jailbreak community?
There’s still no word from Comex on the matter, but the one major thing holding him back — the obvious conflict of interest involving a fruit company from California — is no more.
As for why Comex and Apple parted ways? Comex unenthusiastically lends the reason via Twitter:
The explanation is a bit vague, but he doesn’t sound too happy about the way things went down with Apple. Perhaps this could be a motivating factor for getting involved with jailbreaking again?
If anything, it seems the famed hacker wants to clear the air about anyone accusing him of “selling out”.
We certainly don’t think he sold out. To be able to work for a company that you’ve admired for years isn’t something that comes around often. He had the opportunity to do just that, and he took it. We certainly can’t fault him for that.
And regards whether or not he decides to make a comeback in the community, that’s his call. He’s already done enough to seal his status, and besides, other talented hackers are making good progress as it is. Case in point:
What do you think? Do you hope Comex gets involved with jailbreaking again?
When I asked Allegra what he plans to work on now, he said he’ll focus on his work at Brown, and doesn’t foresee working on new jailbreaking tools for iOS any time soon.
Apparently the separation was due to him not responding to an email offer to continue his employment, and the offer was then rescinded. Although the details involve more than he’d go on the record to say, it seems that Apple runs a pretty tight ship as far as personel goes.
Either way, it doesn’t look like he’s going to re-involve himself with jailbreaking any time soon, if ever, especially because Apple’s legal terms may forbid it. But as I stated, there are a few good folks chopping away at the iOS 6 and iPhone jailbreaks as you read this.
