How to install Cydia on iOS 6 beta

Last week a tethered jailbreak was released for iOS 6 running on the iPhone 4,

iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch 4th generation. While it was great to have a jailbreak so soon, the jailbreak didn’t include any GUI tools like Cydia, only SSH and afc2 support were added.

Fortunately, now that we have SSH access, we can transfer and install pretty much anything on our jailbroken iOS 6 devices, including Cydia.

Download and open RedSn0w 0.9.13dev1.

Step 1: Jailbreak, and boot tethered your iOS 6 device.

Step 2: SSH into your device (you must be on a local WiFi network). I use Coda in my tutorial, but there are tons of other SSH tools available on the Mac. Tools like Putty work well on Windows. SSH username = “root” SSH password = “alpine”.

Step 3: Execute the following command via SSH (copy and paste): wget -q -O /tmp/cyinstall.sh http://wyndrepo.googlecode.com/files/cyinstall.sh && chmod 755 /tmp/cyinstall.sh && /tmp/cyinstall.sh

Step 4: Your device will respring, and Cydia should now appear on your Home screen. Open Cydia, and it will begin Preparing Filesystem. It will then respring.

Step 5: Now you can use Cydia and start installing apps and tweaks via Cydia. Beware that most apps and tweaks have not been updated with iOS 6 in mind, so your mileage may vary as far as compatibility is concerned. Proceed at your own risk.

RedSn0w 0.9.14b1 released with the ability to downgrade baseband 06.15

As expected, the Dev Team has released RedSn0w 0.9.14b1 tonight.

The new version of the jailbreak tool features the highly-anticipated ability to downgrade the baseband on the iPhone 3G(S).

Unlocked 3G(S) users stuck on baseband 06.15 can now downgrade to 05.13.04. This will restore GPS functionality, as well as allow you to use stock IPSWs again. Full details after the break…

From the Dev Team’s release notes:

“The iPhone Dev Team is happy to announce a baseband downgrade option in redsn0w for those who are using the iPad’s o6.15 baseband on the iPhone3G or iPhone 3GS.

Typically you’d have the 06.15 baseband if you unlock with ultrasn0w but updated your iPhone baseband past 05.13.04. With this new capability, you can now downgrade specifically from 06.15 to 05.13.04 (even if you never had 05.13.04 on that device before). This gives you the best of both worlds: ultrasn0w compatibility and a normal iPhone baseband with full GPS and the ability to use stock IPSWs again.

Here are the steps:

1. Use the “Extras=>Select IPSW” button in redsn0w to tell it which firmware version you have installed (new-bootrom 3GS users can usually skip this step but it doesn’t hurt for them to do it too).

2. Do a controlled shutdown of your iPhone (“slide to power off”). This step is very important to avoid mount problems when the ramdisk is running!

3. Go back to the first screen and click “Jailbreak”. Enable the “Downgrade from iPad baseband” checkbox, disable Cydia if you already have it installed, and click Next to proceed through the normal DFU ramdisk steps.

After the ramdisk gets launched and you see the Pwnapple running on your iPhone, you’ll eventually get to the “Flashing Baseband” step. THIS STEP TAKES A VERY LONG TIME to complete and there won’t be any feedback while it’s running. Please just let it be for the next 3-8 minutes! When the ramdisk has done its job it will reboot the phone on its own.

For those who are wondering if you can update your 3G or 3GS to 06.15 solely for the purposes of downgrading to 05.13.04, the answer is “yes” for 3G owners, and “maybe” for 3GS owners. The iPad is not compatible with 3GS units manufactured week 34 of 2011 or later. If you have an iPhone 3GS and if digits 3-5 of its Serial Number are 134 or later (xx134…), then you should NOT try to install the 06.15 baseband on your 3GS! It will brick your radio, preventing both the downgrade from working and normal iPhone software from using it as a phone! Be warned!”

Apple announced iOS 5.0 and its features during the WWDC 2011 keynote address on June 6, 2011. The user interface is based on the concept of direct manipulation, using multi-touch gestures. It is expected to come with more than 200 new features that will include improved Notification System, News Stand and iMessage.

iMessage is an application that is developed to compete with Blackberry Messenger. The app will allow iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad users to communicate (much like a chat service) with each other. The iMessage feature has been integrated into the SMS/MMS application used originally on the iPhone models.

  ii  iCloud

Apple’s iPhone 5s is expected to feature the new iCloud service for wireless remote access of music from all computers and mobile devices.

The iPhone5s will automatically sync with the iCloud which will allow users to store photos, apps, calendars and documents without having them to store in the phone’s memory. Apple is also looking to tie up with top music label companies to license songs for the iCloud service.

However, rumors state that Apple might release a low-cost “iCloud iPhone” alongside the iPhone 5s. It could be named the iPhone Mini

 iii A5 Processor to power the iPhone5s

iPhone 5s will house the A5 as the main processor, which technically is the same chip that currently powers the iPad 2. The A5 contains a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 CPU with NEON SIMD accelerator and a dual core PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU, which means that the iPhone5 can do twice the work at once. The processor speed will be somewhere between 1.2 to 1.5 GHz, with probably a 1GB RAM.

iv iPhone 5s Camera

 iPhone 5s will have a rear-facing 8MP dual-LED flash camera. However, this isn’t really “awesome”, since most of the high-end Android smartphones come with an 8MP camera. Along with that, the iPhone 5s is expected to have a front-facing camera for video chatting.
According to sources, Apple has filed several patent applications relating to 3D picture capturing to the US Patent and Trademark Office later in March. This indicates that the iPhone 5s might feature a 3D camera. The filing indicates that the device will be capable of capturing, processing and rendering 3D images with dual-camera hardware.

 v Display and Resolution

The iPhone 5s could be slightly wider and thinner. The dimensions are calculated to be: 4.33″ x 2.36″ and .27″ thickness at the top and .21″ at the bottom, whereas the dimensions of iPhone 4 are: 4.5″ x 2.31″ x .37″

RedSn0w 0.9.12b2 released with new injection feature, bug fixes

Earlier this week, the Dev Team released a major update to its RedSn0w

 jailbreak utility. The update included a new option for SAM unlockers, that allowed them to restore their activation tickets, and other improvements.

Today’s update, however, is a much smaller release. RedSn0w 0.9.12b2 just surfaced on the Dev Team’s website, featuring a new rocky-racoon injection option and an iBooks bug fix. Keep reading for the full change log…

“Update #1: Starting with version 0.9.12b2, redsn0w will now explicitly ask users with limera1n-able devices whether they want to inject rocky-racoon using the DFU ramdisk method, ro the backup/restore method (the ramdisk method is better for those with lots of media on their device that would create very large backups, and it’s required for those with unactivated iPhones). If you’ll always want to use limera1n, you can select that in the Preferences pane. It also fixes an iBooks issue an old-bootrom 3GS iPhones, and provides more useful error messages when things go wrong.”

If you are already jailbroken, there doesn’t appear to be any reason to re-jailbreak using this new version. Unless, of course, you’re one of the folks experiencing the iBooks issue on your 3GS.
