Steve Job’s life documented in a fascinating Facebook timeline

Since the passing of the late Steve Jobs, we’ve seen many tributes
relating to the man behind Apple. Cult Of Mac have come across an extraordinary rendition of such a tribute.
It’s a fascinating look into Job’s life in none less than a Facebook timeline, documenting his life since the day he was born. As Killian Bell points out, the people behind this tribute must have put a heck of a lot of work into this.
The timeline features literally hundreds of photographs and videos that feature Steve throughout his life, from the Electronics Club at Homestead High School back in 1969, to the day he stepped down from the role of CEO at Apple, and everything in between. It’s just like a wonderfully interactive biography that you can immerse yourself in for hours.
I’ve just taken a look and there is a huge amount of information to divulge but it certainly is an interesting look into his life. I could sit and watch those videos all night long.
Be sure to check out the Facebook page if your a fan of the great Steve Jobs.

Gevey releases SIM unlock for iPhone 4S

Back in November, the Dev Team announced they had found a very
promising iPhone 4S unlock, but there hasn’t been any news on that front ever since. We’ve had anuntethered jailbreak for A5 devices for a while, but the cherry on top would be to get a software unlock via UltraSn0w for the iPhone 4S.
While we’re waiting for a software unlock, a few Chinese companies are working on a hardware unlock. We’ve recently heard about new comers who claimed having a SIM interposer unlock for the iPhone 4S – TPSIM and R-SIM – but we can’t recommend those yet as we haven’t been able to give them a try.
Today, Gevey, a familiar name to us, is releasing the Gevey Ultra S unlock for iPhone 4S…
According to Gevey, their new SIM interposer will work with any iPhone 4S running iOS 5, or iOS 5.0.1 and sporting baseband version 1.0.11, 1.013, 1.0.14.
Those of you who have used a Gevey SIM before know that it can be a little tricky. Fortunately, this new Ultra S unlock comes with some new features that should make the whole process a breeze, at least on paper:
  • GEVEY™ True Plug-and-Play Unlocking SIM Interposer
  • No Need to Dial International Emergency Number 112
  • Untethered Unlock with no Jailbreak Required
  • Compatible with all GSM iPhone 4S SIM Cards
  • Complete Unlock with all 2G and 3G data services
  • No SIM Card Cutting or Physical Modification
  • Works on iOS 5.0, 5.0.1
  • Works on Baseband 1.0.11, 1.013, 1.0.14
  • Guaranteed Better Reception than Previous
  • Decreased Power Consumption
I can spot a couple features that already make this Ultra S unlock much more appealing than previous versions. For starters, there is no need to physically modify your SIM card. Also worth noting, you don’t need to activate the SIM interposer by dialing 112, which, let me remind you, can be considered illegal in certain countries. Gevey also claims better reception and less battery consumption, all this without having to jailbreak your iPhone.
ApplenBerry has released a video showing the Gevey Ultra S unlock for iPhone 4S in action. Spoiler alert: it is long, boring, and doesn’t really show you anything.

If you haven’t fallen asleep while watching this video, you can pre-order your Gevey Ultra S from ApplenBerry. It will cost you $55 and should get to your door early March.
Are you going to buy the Gevey Ultra S for iPhone 4S?

List Of Top Siri Clones/Third-Party Alternatives For Non-iPhone 4S Devices

Since being released in a blaze of glory along with iOS 5
back in October of last year, Siri has been a mainstay in the tech headlines. Unfortunately for the majority, Apple’s system-wide voice recognition software was only officially supported on the brand-new iPhone 4S – leaving some iPad,iPod touch and owners of older iPhones feeling a little underhanded.

The fruit company maintained that the specifics of the iPhone 4S hardware rendered it the only device capable of handling Siri, but we of course suspected it was simply a ploy to bolster sales of the new device which otherwise, would have been pretty unremarkable.

Regardless, devs got to work on a variety of Siri clones, allowing users of the older iDevices to enjoy the perks of the audibly-prompted assistant.

We’ve compiled a list of the very best of such applications, enabling you to enjoy a Siri-like experience whether you have iPad 2 or an iPhone apart from the 4S.
Speaktoit
One of the newer entrants to our shortlist, Speaktoit (speak to it) brings more than voice commands to those unsold by the much-hyped iPhone 4S.

Users have the ability to add a custom avatar to the voice, which is a big deal compared with the small, unremarkable purple microphone icon of Siri.

Speaktoit is a lot more than a cosmetic advance on Siri, though, and if you’re an e-socialite, this may just be the perfect Siri clone for you. On Apple’s version, you can use Siri to post those all-important updates to Twitter and Facebook, but if you aren’t lucky enough to be on an unlimited text plan, you’ll find your monthly SMS allocation is eaten into – quite considerably if you’re a power user.

With Speaktoit, there are no such issues – simply log in, allow access and you’re good to go.
Sure, any Siri clone will have its work cut out trying to overthrow the efforts of Apple, but it’s legit – and you needn’t take our word for it.

Download Speaktoit right now from the App Store, for the reasonable price of $1.99 and test it out for yourself.

Sara
This personified Siri alternative was featured here at iPhoneland a few days ago. Very similar to the real deal, it purports to offer a lot more than the fruit company’s version.

After extensive testing, it is a great solution, but the response times are sluggish at best. Furthermore, Siri operates via the trustworthy Apple servers, whereas Sara has its own ideas on where data passes though.

A good clone of Siri it is, but please proceed with caution. Check out this post for more information, including download links.

ESRA
An initialism of Experimental Speech Response Application, ESRA is a decent, free alternative to Siri for all iOS devices

Experimental does give the game away somewhat, but we reckon ESRA is something of
an unpolished gem. It’s still in a developmental stage, but already looks promising.

To get started with ESRA, search for it in Cydia – provided you have the BigBoss repository in your source list. If you’re unsure as to what the BigBoss repo is, then you more than likely have it, since it’s a default source on any jailbroken device.

Evi
The first thing you’ll notice about Evi is that it isn’t strictly a personal assistant like Siri, but more of an information hub which can answer your burning questions – like Google, but possibly a little more convenient.

It wont send SMS or remind you to call your wife when you get home, but it can manage simple calculations, currency conversions and deliver some useful knowledge upon request.

The UI is beautiful, and response times are pretty darn decent. That said, if you’re looking for a proper assistant which does a little more than merely churn out excerpts locatable in a Google search, we may suggest Sara as a better alternative.

It remains to be seen whether voice activation will be a mainstay in the smartphone market. Yes, Siri has sat well with consumers hitherto, but if it does manage to achieve longevity past novelty, then maybe it will become the norm for folk to engage in conversation with binary.

As a precaution, please  be wary of the various fake Siri clones / ports / alternatives currently doing the rounds. If you stumble across such an app or tweak, Google it, check the reviews and the stories before you go gun-ho and install it on your device to avoid any nasty surprises.

RedSn0w updated with stability improvements and other bug fixes

Folks that have been experiencing problems jailbreaking
their A4 devices using RedSn0w will be happy to know that the Dev Team has just rolled out an update for the popular utility.
The new software, which is now at version 0.9.10b5c, includes a number of stability improvements and bug fixes. The Dev Team posted the update to its blog last night along with the following message…
“Updates #5b and #5c: Version b5b fixes an issue with using custom ramdisks on iPhone3G and iPod2G, and version b5c prevents redsn0w from crashing due to the ever-growing ramdisk size :) .
TIP: If auto-detection fails and redsn0w tells you no identifying data as wound, you can always pre-select the appropriate 5.0.1 IPSW using “Extras->Select IPSW”.”
We’ve updated our Downloads page with the latest version of RedSn0w, so if you’ve been having any of the above-mentioned issues you can find it there.

Sara: A Siri alternative for older devices, including the iPhone 2G

Looking to add Siri on your iPhone 2G, iPod touch, or virtually any other
pre-iPhone 4S device? Then look no further than Sara.
Sara is far from perfect, but if Siri Proxy is not an option for you then it is likely the next best thing.
Check inside as we take Sara for a test drive on video…

There’s no denying that Sara is limited in function when compared to the real thing; for instance, you can’t use location based query commands without Sara returning some sort of nonsense. Alarm clocks don’t work, weather can be inaccurate, and a whole host of other grammar inaccuracies ensure no one will be mistaking Sara for the real thing any time soon.
But it is free, and it’s a decent addition for owners of older jailbroken devices like the original iPhone or iPod touch.
Sara even features some advanced options like translation, YouTube search, and more. Of course, you can do all of that with a real jailbroken Siri implementation, but it’s still nice to be able to pull this off on an older device where Siri was never intended to run.
If you want to try this for yourself, add the following repo to your sources: http://isoftjsc.com and download the package that corresponds with your device. Be aware that the download will likely time out a few times, but keep trying; I think their servers may be getting hammered.
In the end Sara is another wannabe Siri alternative that doesn’t come very close to the real thing; however, it’s better than nothing if you aren’t up to fooling with Siri Proxy and/or you have an older iOS device.
What are your thoughts on Sara?
